The Hong Kong Red Cross started its voluntary non-remunerated blood donation programme in 1952. Currently, the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) is the only public institution providing blood to all hospitals in Hong Kong. It has been managed by the Hospital Authority since December 1991. Since there is no substitute for blood, the supply of blood relies on the voluntary, non-remunerated donors.

Objectives

• To achieve self-sufficiency in the supply of clinical blood products in Hong Kong.
• To recruit voluntary non-remunerated blood donors and to collect blood in accordance with the provisions laid down by Hospital Authority (BTS) Expert Panel on Blood and Blood Products Safety for the protection and welfare of donors and recipients.
• To test, manufacture and distribute blood and its derivatives to hospitals in accordance with international and local quality standards.
• To provide reference support to hospital blood banks and to assist hospitals in developing good transfusion practice.
• To review and improve the blood transfusion service in Hong Kong from time to time.
• To recruit voluntary donors to join the Hong Kong Bone Marrow Donor Registry and to search suitable haematopoietic stem cells (bone marrow or cord blood) for patients in need of bone marrow transplant.
• To strive for environmental protection by adopting the 4R Principles of Waste Reduction (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Replace) in our activities where practicable.

• Blood Collection - Interested members of the public may give blood in Donor Centres, Mobile Vehicles or Mobile Sessions.
• Donor Recruitment - Donor recruitment is an important part of our service. Voluntary non-remunerated blood donors are needed every day for patients requiring medical treatment. Mobile blood donation sessions are organized daily at Government departments, educational institutes, commercial corporations, religious organisations, and social groups to ensure demand is met in full.
• Blood Tests - To ensure safety of blood receipients, all blood collected are tested for : Hepatitis B surface antigen, Hepatitis C antibodies, Syphilis, HIV and HTLV-1 antibodies.
• Supply of Blood and Blood Components - Over 300,000 units of blood and blood components are supplied to hospitals each year.
• Publicity and Education - Community activities and promotions are held regularly to enable the public to learn more about the importance of blood and to become regular donors.
