Myths & Facts About Donation
 
Myths 1: Bone Marrow donation will damage our nervous system
 
Bone marrow is a thick, blood-like tissue found inside the cavities of the body's hollow bone. It consists of haematopoietic stem cells (HSC) which have an important and property of self regeneration. They can produce red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in the blood circulation. They continuously divide and differentiate into these blood cells to replenish day to day loss. The bone marrow is a tissue completely different from spinal fluid, spinal cord, or nervous system.
 
Myths 2: Risky procedure
 
Risk is minimal but can happen
Anaesthesia can have very small risk e.g. anaphylaxis
 
Myths 3: Once donated, can't recover
 
Only 3% of HSC donated
HSC has self renewal and regenerated capacity
One HSC cell survives since its presence in utero to the time when individual is dead
 
Myths 4: Painful procedure
 
Yes, some pain experience especially after bone marrow donation
Mostly resolves within days; overwhelmed by joy and satisfaction from helping patients
 
Myths 5 : Can I get tested for a specific patient or family member through HKBMDR?
 
According to the international practice, the identities of the donor and patient will not be disclosed to each other. HKBMDR will provide the following basic information about the donor and patients i.e. sex, age group and category of disease.
However, if they both wish, the HKBMDR can arrange them to meet or contact to each other not less than one year after the transplantation. While during the first year of transplantation, both parties can only be contacted anonymously by mail through HKBMDR.
 
Myths 6: Do the donors need to pay for any fee?
 
Donors are not required to pay for any fee in relation to the blood tests, body checkup and hospitalization for donation.
 
Myths 7:Registration = donation
 
Only give few 5 ml of blood for registration, also demographics and contact information
Donation can be far beyond registration. In most donors, may never happen or approach for follow up tests
