The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) held the Annual Donor Award Ceremony cum World Blood Donor Day Celebration on 4 and 11 June 2017 to present awards to those who had cumulatively achieved 25-time donations or above as at last year. There were 2,051 blood donors who had cumulatively donated 25 times and 1,270 blood donors who cumulatively achieved 50 donations or more (higher multiples of 25). We were very honoured to have invited Dr Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, to officiate and present awards at the ceremony on 11 June 2017.
Other officiating guests at the ceremonies also included Prof. Francis Chan, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine cum Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine & Therapeutics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong , Mr, Philip Tsai, Deputy Chairman of Hong Kong Red Cross , Mr. Ambrose Ho, Chairman of Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) Governing Committee , Dr Leung Pak-yin, Chief Executive of Hospital Authority and Dr Albert C Y Lo, Cluster Chief Executive of Kowloon Central Cluster,.
Dr Ko Wing-man pointed out that there is no substitute for blood and it has shelf cycle. The BTS needs to recruit 1,100 blood donors every day to ensure sufficient and stable blood supply to local hospitals for timely blood transfusion treatment.
