Post Donation Advice

After Blood Donation, If you:

  • Develops signs or symptoms of an infection with 4 weeks (e.g. common cold, fever, etc.) or develop hepatitis, tuberculosis or malaria within 6 months.
  • Decide your blood should not be used.
  • Revise the information you provided in the Blood Donation Registration Form.

Post Donation Advice

Over the next 12 hours

  • Drink plenty of fluid to replenish volume loss.
  • The plaster can be removed after few hours.
  • Avoid heavy lifting to prevent bruising of venipuncture site.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise.

HANDLING OF ADVERSE REACTION

Fainting

  • Take a seat or lie down immediately and raise your legs to increase blood flow to the brain.
  • Loosen tight clothing and belts.
  • Keep calm, take slow and long deep breaths.
  • Seek assistance from passers-by.

Bruising

  • Bruising may occur following blood donation if there is bleeding underneath the skin.  It will gradually subside and disappears in a week’s time.

  • Apply cold pad to the bruise within 24 hours after blood donation; warm pad could be used for pain relief thereafter.

 

Skin allergy /Arm pain / Numbness

  • If there is severe skin rash or itchiness, redness, swelling, pain or numbness around the venipuncture site, please contact the Blood Transfusion Service or consult your physician immediately.
  • For mild skin rash over the venipuncture area, use warm water to thoroughly clean the skin around the venipuncture site in order to remove the irritants e.g. skin disinfectant.

 

Iron Absorption Tips

  • Increase intake of iron-rich food.
  • Vitamin C-rich food enhances iron absorption.
  • Avoid coffee or tea during meals.
  • Complete the whole course of oral iron supplement to replenish the iron store.
